After the death of his first wife, Karve, Anna for all, married Anandibai alias Baya Karve who was a child widow. At the age of 24, Baya took admission for first std. in the school of Pandita Ramabai. She remarried Karve in 1893. A widower’s remarriage was an accepted social practice but a widow marrying again was sacrilege. The couple was a target of harsh unkind criticism and was boycotted by many. Unperturbed Karve continued his mission of women’s education. He was ably supported by Baya who took care of home and hearth, raised her children and also lent a hand in Karve’s work.
Baya Karve’s memories were published in a book titled “Maze Puran” which is an interesting account of her life with Anna and also a documentation of social issues of her times.
