Dr. Dhondo Keshav Karve, a great visionary and a social worker was deeply moved by the deplorable conditions of women in the society. He established “Hingne Stree Shikshan Samstha” in Pune, an Institution merely for women’s education way back in 1896.The Institution is successfully and relentlessly working till date; with the objectives of uplift, emancipation and education of women. As an expression of gratitude and respect for the pioneering social work done by Bharat Ratna- Dr. D.K. Karve; the institution was renamed after him as “Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha”.
In the olden days; educating girls and women was not much accepted by the society. Attaining education was not at all easy for girls. They had to highly depend on the reformers and patrons in the society. However with time, the perception about education has changed but the need for funds still continues.
The students of “Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha” (MKSSS), Pune – coming from low income group are not charged a single penny for their tuition fees. Nevertheless, the allied expenditure sum up largely. It comprises of the expenses for hostel accommodation, breakfast, tiffin, dinner, other educational expenses etc. The students approaching the institution substantially belong to the rural areas and weaker sections of the society.
The Institution highly depends on the financial support extended by the donors and patrons among the society.
